Microgravity Level Measurement of the Beijing Drop Tower Using a Sensitive Accelerometer

Abstract: Drop tower is the most common ground-based facility to provide microgravity environment and widely used in many science experiments. A differential space accelerometer has been proposed to test the spin-gravity interaction between rotating extended bodies onboard a drag-free satellite. In order to assist design and test of this inertial sensor in a series of ground- based pre-flight experiments, it is very important to know accurately the residual acceleration of drop towers. In this report, a sensitive instru… Show more

“…For these reasons, researchers have devoted great efforts to developing ground-based low-gravity simulators. One major category, which utilizes free fall to generate near-zero gravity, includes drop towers 19 , 20 , parabolic aircraft 21 , 22 , sounding rockets 23 , and suborbital rocketry 24 . Despite their usefulness, a known limitation of these facilities is the relatively short low-gravity duration (i.e., from several seconds to a few minutes 25 ), which makes them unsuitable for experiments that require long observation times 26 .…”

“…All organisms on earth have evolved under a constant gravitational acceleration of 1 g . Space flight is a clear deviation from this, but also physical exercises and extreme sports, such as some amusement rides, skydiving, bungee jumping, or wing-suit flying, can change the experienced gravitational force and elicit acute stress (van Westerloo et al, 2011; Gomez and Rao, 2016; Liu et al, 2016). The changes range from microgravity at near weightlessness to hypergravity.…”
