Microlaparoscopic pyloromyotomy in children: initial experiences with a new technique

Abstract: Despite the limited patient population included in this study, we conclude that use of microlaparoscopic pyloromyotomy for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is safe and feasible, and the technique provides minimal access trauma and superior cosmesis.

“…Inguinal hernia repair in premature infants and babies <3 kg is one technique where laparoscopy can be effectively performed whereupon it is described that these babies require more systemic postoperative pain drugs as compared to open procedures . Repair of hypertrophic pylorus stenosis is another example for laparoscopies in small babies . Three meta‐analyses investigate various outcome parameters of laparoscopic vs conventional pyloromyotomy .…”

“…Over the last three and a half years, we implemented the new minimally invasive technique for pyloromyotomy-the microlaparoscopic approach-in a prospective study. 8 To date, the microlaparoscopic pyloromyotomy has not been compared with the open approaches. This retrospective study compares the surgical results and the outcomes of the microlaparoscopic approach to the open techniques of the right upper quadrant access and of the circumbilical approach for pyloromyotomy.…”
