Microporous carbon membranes from sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone): Preparation, characterization, and gas permeation

Abstract: Microporous carbon membranes (MCM) were prepared from sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (SPPESK) through stabilization and pyrolysis processes. The effects of sulfonation degree (SD) of SPPESK and the stabilization temperature on the structure and gas permeation of MCM were investigated. The thermal decomposition behavior of SPPESK was studied by thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry. The evolution of functional groups on membrane surface was detected by Fourier transform infrared spec… Show more

“…Owing to the relatively low energy requirements (no phase changes), smaller footprint, reduced environmental impact (no toxic solvents), easier operation (no moving parts or liquid flow problems), no corrosion issues and inherent modularity (constant contact area), polymer‐based carbon membrane has been considered to be a promising technique for CO 2 capture 4‐8. According to Baker,9 one of the current membrane markets is dominated by natural gas purification.…”

“…Peaks were observed at 2q = 20° to 25° and another weak peak at 2q = 42° to 45° was attributed to (002) peak and (100) peak, respectively [23]. The (002) peak is derived from spacing between graphite sheets and (100) peak is related to the distance between carbon atoms within a graphite sheet [24].…”
