The cultivation of medicinal plants and the production of bioactive compounds derived from them are of fundamental importance and interest, not only at the pharmacological level but also in nutraceutical and cosmetic industries and in functional foods, as well as plant protection in agriculture. In order to respond adequately to the increased demands of the global market from a quantitative and qualitative point of view and to guarantee environmental sustainability of the productions, it is necessary to resort to innovation tools, such as tissue culture in vitro technology. Nowadays, it is well known that the cultivation through the Temporary Immersion System (TIS) in a bioreactor has considerable advantages both for the in vitro mass production of the plants and for the production of secondary metabolites. The present review focuses on the application of TIS during the last two decades to produce biomass and bioactive compounds from medicinal plants. Indeed, almost one hundred papers are discussed, and they particularly focus on the effects of the culture system, vessel design and equipment, immersion time and frequency, and substrate composition for 88 medicinal species in TIS bioreactor culture.

Nas últimas décadas, o ensino de Biologia e Ciências Naturais vem sendo voltado, basicamente à preparação dos alunos para os exames vestibulares (Silva, 2019), o que reduziu o ensino à memorização de conceitos, regras e processos, limitando a natureza a eventos repetitivos (Costa; Mota; Brito, 2021). Para que o saber científico seja compreendido em sua amplitude é necessário que se considere, de maneira geral, tudo que se apresenta ao redor dos organismos abordados durante as disciplinas (Monerat & Rocha, 2018). O ensino de botânica foi, durante um longo período, separado do ambiente natural (Pereira-Ribeiro et al., 2018). Publicações na área priorizavam a flora e paisagens estrangeiras em detrimento às nacionais, o que levou a uma redução no interesse pela botânica (Mello, 1996) e, consequentemente, a uma desconsideração da paisagem nativa como integrante da vida cotidiana dos alunos. Ferramentas alternativas de ensino são fundamentais tanto na compreensão dos assuntos ministrados em sala de aula, como na fixação da terminologia e dos conceitos exibidos em aulas teóricas das mais diversas disciplinas (Perini & Rossini, 2018). A participação dos alunos em jogos em grupo, busca estimular crianças e adolescentes, a desenvolverem o raciocínio lógico além de promover uma maior integração social entre os alunos (Paiva; Fonseca; Colares, 2022). Nesse sentido, essa ação de extensão tem como objetivo primordial elaborar e testar estratégias metodológicas como ferramentas alternativas para o ensino de Ciências Naturais, Botânica e Educação Ambiental, usando como base jogos didáticos botânicos, fundamentados na flora regional, que foram testados em salas de aula do 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental da Escola Estadual Maria Almeida do Nascimento, Coari/AM. A metodologia constitui-se de reuniões realizadas com os alunos extensionistas traçando medidas de avaliação, bem como da aplicação dos jogos e os resultados obtidos, que foram divulgados e disponibilizados como ferramenta metodológica alternativa aos professores da escola participante. Como resultado, verificou-se que o jogo auxiliou a introduzir e fixar conteúdos de botânica, principalmente de morfofisiologia vegetal e conservação do meio ambiente nos discentes comunitários, que são os alunos do 6º ano do ensino fundamental, em quem o jogo será aplicado.

In recent decades, the teaching of Biology and Natural Sciences has been primarily focused on preparing students for college entrance exams (Silva, 2019), reducing education to the memorization of concepts, rules, and processes and limiting nature to repetitive events (Costa; Mota; Brito, 2021). To fully comprehend scientific knowledge, it’s necessary to consider everything that surrounds the organisms discussed in these courses (Monerat & Rocha, 2018). Botany education was, for an extended period, disconnected from the natural environment (Pereira-Ribeiro et al., 2018). Publications in the field predominantly emphasized foreign flora and landscapes over domestic ones, leading to a decline in interest in botany (Mello, 1996) and, consequently, neglecting the native landscape as part of students’ daily life. Alternative teaching tools are crucial for understanding the subjects taught in the classroom and for retaining the terminology and concepts presented in theoretical classes across various disciplines (Perini & Rossini, 2018). The participation of students in group games aims to stimulate children and adolescents to develop logical reasoning and promote greater social integration among students (Paiva; Fonseca; Colares, 2022). In this context, this university extension project’s primary objective is to develop and test methodological strategies as alternative tools for teaching Natural Sciences, Botany, and Environmental Education. The foundation of these strategies is botanical educational games rooted in regional flora, which were tested in 6th-grade classrooms at the State School Maria Almeida do Nascimento in Coari/AM. The methodology includes meetings with student extensionists to outline evaluation measures, the application of games, and the dissemination of the results. These results have been made available as an alternative methodological tool for the school’s teachers. As a result, it was observed that the game effectively facilitated the introduction and consolidation of botanical content, particularly in plant morphophysiology and environmental conservation, among community learners, who are 6th-grade students for whom the game is intended.
