MicroRNAs as potential target in human bone and soft tissue sarcoma therapeutics

Abstract: Sarcomas are highly aggressive heterogeneous tumors that are mesenchymal in origin. There have been vast advancements on identifying diagnostic markers for sarcomas including chromosomal translocations, but very little progress has been made to identify targeted therapies against them. The tumor heterogeneity, genetic complexity and the lack of drug studies make it challenging to recognize the potential targets and also accounts for the inadequate treatments in sarcomas. In recent years, microRNAs that are a p… Show more

“…Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a group of rare heterogeneous cancers of mesenchymal tissues consisting of more than 50 histological subtypes and account for~1% of all malignant tumors [1]. Regardless of the advancement in understanding of STS, treatment options are stagnant for the past few decades because of their rarity, genetic complexities, and late diagnosis.…”

“…In recent years, miRNAs have shown encouraging results as potential biomarkers in many sarcoma types [8,9]. Several studies are being undertaken to target them which is essential for development of enhanced therapies for various human sarcomas [1]. Till date, there are only a handful of miRNAs reported in STS metastasis.…”

“…Outra importância está relacionada ao tratamento quimioterápico, sendo que os miRNAs também são utilizados como biomarcadores da resposta ao osteossarcoma. Um exemplo disso é a expressão aumentada de miR-140 e miR-215, que cursa com resistência a vários quimioterápicos, como o metotrexato (VARSHNEY ; SUBRAMANIAN, 2015).…”
