Microscopic Features, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Capacities of Plants of the Congolese Cosmetopoeia, Raw Materials of Cosmeceuticals

Abstract: Cosmeceuticals are the fastest growing products in the cosmetics field and represent a hybrid between cosmetics and drugs. The main benefits reported for cosmeceutical herbal extracts, used in skin care, include antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and the tyrosinase inhibiting effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of extracts from Chromolaena odorata, Mitracarpus villosus, Senna alata, Tetradenia riparia, Cannabis sativa and Pterocarpus soyauxii used tr… Show more

“… Elaka et al (2020) , investigated the antibacterial potential of a T. riparia leaves dichloromethane: methanol (1:1) extract. The extract was obtained by percolation, and tested against S. aureus ATCC 25923, E. coli ATCC25922, and P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027).…”

“…Studies with T. riparia have demonstrated many biological activities, such as antimicrobial ( Gazim et al, 2010 ; York et al, 2012 ; Elaka et al, 2020 ; Scanavacca et al, In Press ), antioxidant ( Fernandez et al, 2017 ), antitumor ( Gazim et al, 2014 ), analgesic ( Gazim et al, 2010 ), anti-leishmania ( Cardoso et al, 2015 ; Demarchi et al, 2015 ; Leitão et al, 2020 ), antituberculosis ( Baldin et al, 2018 ), antiparasitic ( de Melo et al, 2015 ), as well as acaricidal and larvicidal ( Lorenzi and Matos, 2008 ; Gazim et al, 2011 ; Fernandez et al, 2014 ; Zardeto-Sabec et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Antioxidant activity is one of the most important properties of food plants. 1 An antioxidant is any substance occurring at lower concentrations than that of an oxidizable substrate, and capable of significantly delaying or even preventing the oxidation of that substrate. 2 The human body, in fact, produces powerful antioxidants such as alpha-lipoic acid and glutathione.…”

“…In this first character, free radicals are friendly products of normal cellular metabolism and play incredible roles in the immune defense system, in several cellular signaling pathways, in mitogenic response as well as in redox regulation [4]. However, due to their strong oxidative character, excessive amounts of free radicals may get out of control and cause severe damages to biological macromolecules such as lipids [5], proteins [6], and DNA [7], which may ultimately lead to apoptotic or nectrotic cell death [8].…”
