Over the past decade, in the industrial sector we have witnessed the rise of a revolutionary movement, known as Industry 4.0, that promotes the digital transformation as the key to increase the competitiveness of manufacturing factories. Among the many technologies recognized as “drivers” of such revolutionary transition, microservices stand out as a software development paradigm capable of bringing several benefits to the manufacturing process. Whilst the literature offers many examples of initiatives exploiting microservices in digitally-advanced sectors (e.g., finance, telecommunication, retailing), its potential in the industrial manufacturing is yet to be fully unleashed. We conducted an extensive literature survey in the twofold aim of bringing to the reader’s attention the many benefits that the microservices paradigm may offer in industrial manufacturing settings, and drawing a picture of how light virtualization techniques are actually being exploited to achieve Industry 4.0 digitization goals. In this paper, we propose a structured analysis of the collected literature proposals which combines the benefits sought by authors when approaching to the microservices techniques and the specific scope of application of proposals. We conclude the paper highlighting the research aspects that have not been sufficiently explored in the literature and that would deserve further attention in the near future.

This paper proposes an improved monitoring and measuring system dedicated to industrial infrastructure. Our model achieves security of data by incorporating cryptographical methods and near real-time access by the use of virtual tree structure over records. The currently available blockchain networks are not very well adapted to tasks related to the continuous monitoring of theparameters of industrial installations. In the database systems delivered by default (the so-called world state), only the resultant or the last value recorded by the IoT device is stored. Effective use of measurement values recorded in the past requires each time viewing the entire chain of recorded events for a given IoT device. The solution proposed in the article introduces the concept of dependent wallets, the purpose of which is the aggregation and indexation of changes in machine parameters, recorded in the original wallets. As a result, we can easily get data from a certain sensor or sensors in the specified date range, even if the chain of transactions is very long. Our contribution is a universal mechanism that improves the efficiency of the infrastructure monitoring process, which uses blockchains to record measurements from sensors. The proposed model has been experimentally tested on two types of blockchains: Stellar and Hyperledger Fabric.

Industry 4.0 involves the digital transformation of the industry with the integration and digitization of all industrial processes that make up the value chain, which is characterized by adaptability, flexibility, and efficiency to meet the needs of customers in today's market. Therefore, the adaptations of the new bioprocess industry require a lot of flexibility to react quickly and constantly to market changes and to be able to offer more specialized, customized products with high operational efficiency. This paper presents a flexible, scalable, and robust framework based on software components, container technology, microservice concepts, and the publish/subscribe paradigm. This framework allows new components to be added or removed online, without the need for system reconfiguration, while maintaining temporal and functional constraints in industrial automation systems. The main objective of the framework proposed is the use of components based on microservices, allowing easy implementation, scalability, and fast maintenance, without losing or degrading the robustness from previous developments. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed framework was verified in two case studies (1) a soursop soda making process is presented, with a fuzzy controller implemented to keep the pasteurizer output flow constant (UHT) and (2) an automatic storage tank selection and filling process with actuated valves to direct the fluid to the corresponding tank at the time to start the process. The results showed that the platform provided a high-fidelity design, analysis, and testing environment for the flow of cyber information and its effect on the physical operation in a beverage processing plant with high demand for flexibility, scalability, and robustness of its processes, as they were experimentally verified in a real production process.INDEX TERMS Industry 4.0, distributed industrial automation systems, interoperability, middleware, industrial cyber-physical systems.
