Microstructural characterization of 5 to 9 pct Cr-2 pct W-V-Ta martensitic steels

Abstract: The microstructure of 9Cr-2W-0.25V-0.1C (9Cr-2WV), 9Cr-2W-0.25V-0.07Ta-0.1C (9Cr-2WVTa), 7Cr-2W-0.25V-0.07Ta-0.1C (7Cr-2WVTa), and 5Cr-2W-0.25V-0.07Ta-0.1C (5Cr-2WVTa) steels (all compositions are in wt pct) have been characterized by analytical electron microscopy (AEM) and atom probe field ion microscopy (APFIM). These alloys have potential applications in fusion reactors because they exhibit reduced neutron activation in comparison to the conventional Cr-Mo steels. The matrix in all four alloys was 100 pct … Show more

“…12) MX particles Ta or V-rich were also reported for normalized ORNL RA steels, tempered at 750°C. 7) These three types of morphologies, including in some cases the "wing" morphology, have been observed in 9CrMoVNb, 13) 9CrWCoVNb 14) and CrWNb 15) steels after tempering but, to our knowledge, the "wing" morphology involving Ta and V has not been reported in other alloys of composition similar to Eurofer97, such as F82H or JLF1. On the other hand, "duplex" precipitates, in which many TaC particles precipitate on a rectangular TiN particle were found for the F82H RA steel.…”

“…More generally, the type of carbide precipitated after 1 h tempering at 750°C in CrWV and CrWTa steels has been observed to depend on the Cr content of the matrix, giving a transition from a major phase M 7 C 3 (trigonal structure, space group Pnma) for 5Cr steels to the M 23 C 6 phase for 9Cr steels. 7) The M 23 C 6 phase was Cr-rich with smaller amounts of W and V, the balance of the metallic component being iron. 7) Similar results for carbide composition measurements were found in experimental AEA-Culham 9 to 11CrWVTa steels after tempering at 675 or 750°C and ageing at 750°C for 500 h or at 500°C for 1 000 h, 18) and for the Eurofer97 RA alloy after tempering 11) and ageing.…”

“…It is reported that V(CN) particles on the extracted replicas from high Cr heat resistant steels of the normalized and tempered state contain about 15 % of Cr according to the TEM-EDS analysis. 13,14) Other researchers reported the TEM-EDS with an noticeable peak of Cr 15,16) and without any peak of Cr. 12,17) The above reports are on the normalized and tempered specimens, so that Cr carbides should be around the V(CN) particles of interest.…”
