Microstructural characterization of short glass fiber and PAN based carbon fiber reinforced nylon 6 polymer composites

Abstract: Microstructural characterization of nylon 6/short glass fiber (SGF) and nylon 6/polyacrolonitrile based carbon fibers (PAN‐CFs) of 10 to 40 wt% has been performed by positron lifetime technique (PLT). The positron lifetime parameters viz., o‐Ps lifetime (τ3), o‐Ps intensity (I3), and fractional free volume (Fv) of nylon 6/SGF and nylon 6/PAN‐CF composites are correlated with the mechanical properties viz., tensile strength and Young's modulus. The Fv shows negative deviation with the reinforcement of 10 to 40 … Show more

“…As expected, after acid oxidation treatment, the spectrum of oxidized CF showed new small peaks belonged to ‐COOH at 3,550 and 1,548 cm −1 , suggesting that the carboxyl groups are formed on CF . As for the sized CF, new peaks of v (C=O) at 1,725 cm −1 and σ (CO) at 3,550 cm −1 indicate that the sizing contains active ester and carboxyl groups . After physical coating of APTES coupling agent, the CFs‐APTES is detected to obtain ‐NH groups (1,511 cm −1 ), which means the nitrogen‐containing groups has been introduced on fiber surface successfully.…”

“…, after depositing GO on virgin CF, v (C=O) at 3,385 cm −1 has formed as a result of the multiple actions of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Besides, peaks at 1,593 and 1,384 cm −1 are allocated to the stretching vibration of C=C and methyl flexural vibration of ‐CH 3 , demonstrating that the deposited‐GO sheets are of high chemical activity and covalently adhered on CF surface.…”

“…On the other hand, it is well known that glass fibers (GFs) and carbon fibers are widely used in reinforcing polymers due to their superior mechanical properties, good processability, low manufacturing costs, and so on . Especially for thermoplastics, reinforcement with fibers is a highly attractive approach because the resulting composites can be readily produced in large‐scale using highly efficient commercial process such as extrusion compounding and injection molding .…”
