Microstructure and compression strength of novel TRIP-steel/Mg-PSZ composites

Abstract: biermann@ww.tu-freiberg.de Abstract. A novel steel-based composite material, composed of metastable austenitic stainless steel as matrix and up to 15 % zirconia as reinforcement, is processed by two powder metallurgy routes. The matrix exhibits the so-called TRIP-effect (TRIP: TRansformationInduced Plasticity) and shows a deformation-induced formation of martensite. Compression tests of rod samples processed by cold isostatic pressing show increased strength compared to the non-reinforced steel matrix up to 20… Show more

“…In Ref. [1] magnesia partially stabilized ZrO 2 was proposed to use as a reinforced component of the steel-ceramic composite. Our present study is part of an ongoing project which is aimed at developing a thermodynamic database for simulation of reactions occurring during processing of the above mentioned composite material.…”

“…The phase relations in the ZrO 2 –TiO 2 system are important for application in metal matrix composite. High alloyed ductile TRIP‐steel (Transformation Induced Plasticity) exhibited extraordinary high values of specific energy absorption due to reinforcing by Mg‐PSZ‐ceramic (MgO Partially Stabilized Zirconia) . Since, the Mg‐PSZ‐ceramic shows a martensitic transformation of tetragonal to monoclinic phase during deformation resulting in additional strength increase in the TRIP‐steel .…”

“…Due to its very good biological compatibility and because of its aesthetic white color, zirconia is used as structural ceramics for dental technology and for wearresistant hip and knee joints. Recently, a Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 799 [1] 1 has been established focusing on the development of zirconia based composites, which requires an in-depth understanding of the mechanical properties of zirconia and their relationship to microstructure. A typical microstructure of a composite produced by the CRC 799 using spark plasma sintering is shown in Fig.…”
