Microstructure and rolling contact fatigue life of austenitic nitrocarburized STB 2 high carbon chromium bearing steel

Abstract: Microstructures and rolling contact fatigue properties of STB 2 high carbon chromium bearing steel were investigated by means of electron microscopy, hardness tests and rolling contact fatigue tests. In order to examine the influence of the heat treatment process on microstructures and rolling contact fatigue, two kinds of heat treatment processes, quenching/tempering (QT) and austenitic nitrocarburizing were performed on STB 2 steel. Rolling contact fatigue life of the nitrocarbufized steel was 3.7 times long… Show more

“…Therefore, we can conclude that the rated lives of the two steels are approximately the same based on the almost similar initial surface hardness, which is consistent with the experimental results in Table 2 . Reports have shown [ 11 , 36 ] that the higher hardness of high-C–Cr bearing steel prolongs the RCF life. Thus, the RCF life of the specimen, which does not fail after 1.38 × 10 7 cycles, is further increased by the hardness increasing.…”
