Microstructure Observation of Preform for High Performance VGCF/Aluminum Composites

Abstract: Although carbon nanofibers show high thermal conductivities and excellent mechanical properties, their composites do not show superior properties because the short nanofibers are discontinuous. Casting vapor-grown-carbon-fiber-reinforced pure-aluminum-matrix (VGCF/Al) composites requires a continuous VGCF preform carbon lattice and bridging between the VGCFs. We investigated how heating affected mesophase pitch (MP) crystallization and how the VGCFs affected the MP-bridging between the VGCFs used to fabricated… Show more

“…Figure 4c, f shows the inverse fast Fourier transforms (IFFTs) of the MEREB 6 and HEREB 6 images from the dislocations in the white boxed area in Figure 4b,e, respectively. Furthermore, linear dislocation lines, which exist alone or intertwined to form dislocation networks (as shown in Figure 4c,f), are observed [51,52]. The dislocations potentially occur due to the lattice distortion caused by the multi-component design.…”

“…Carbon materials including carbon fiber, carbon nanofiber, 7) carbon nanotubes 8) are commonly investigated due to their high specific surface area (SSA), good elevated temperature stability, profitable electrical conductivity. In the recent years, research efforts have been made to CF reinforced Al matrix composites 911) and Vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF, CNF) reinforced Al matrix composites.…”

“…The smaller loss in the CSF/ASF-Al composite s TC can be attributed to the high TC and aspect ratio of the carbon ber. In the previous study 10) , thermal conductivities of unidirectional and transverse-CF/Al composites with 30% volume fraction were reported the 273.2 W·m . In addition, there was no anisotropic the direction of ber.…”
