Microstructure of carbon blacks determined by X-ray diffraction profile analysis

Abstract: The microstructure of carbon blacks is investigated by X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis. Strain anisotropy is accounted for by the dislocation model of the mean square strain in terms of average dislocation contrast factors. Crystallite shape anisotropy is modeled by ellipsoids incorporated into the size profile function. Different grades of carbon blacks, N990, N774 and N134, untreated, heat-treated and compressed at 2.5 GPa have been investigated. The microstructure is characterized in terms of crysta… Show more

“…2 are normalized toward the peak observed at 2θ=20-26°; the vertical lines mark the position of the tabulated graphite peaks. The patterns of similar characteristics are rather typical for a disordered carbon phase [17], including the so-called short-range graphite or turbostratic structure of the sample [18,19].…”

“…The effect of graphitization and pressure treatment on the microstructure and internal stresses of carbon blacks is studied by XLPA [118,119]. The Fourier transforms of the experimental line profiles are fitted by theoretical functions based on the model of the microstructure.…”

“…With the addition of CNP into the PU matrix, the crystalline peak of PU at 21 was decreased because CNP seems to hinder the crystallization of PU molecules, and the new peaks for CNP appeared at 25 and 44. This presents graphite-like quasi-crystalline domains [12]. …”
