Microvascular specializations promoting rapid interstitial solute dispersion in nucleus tractus solitarius

Abstract: Nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), an aggregate of several individual nuclear groups in the dorsal medulla oblongata, is involved in virtually all autonomic functions as the first synaptic site in the brain for many peripheral viscerosomatic inputs. We found morphological evidence that dorsocaudal subregions of rat NTS (approximately 800 microns caudal from obex) had fenestrated capillaries and enlarged Virchow-Robin (perivascular) spaces that were similar to those in area postrema but unlike capillaries elsewh… Show more

“…It should also be noted that gastrointestinal hormones released into the circulation could affect brainstem function independent of primary afferent nerves by acting directly on neurons in the area postrema and NTS. Both these structures have a weak or absent blood brain barrier (Gross et al, 1990) (Gross et al, 1991). Since dendrites of vagal motor neurons penetrate deep into the NTS, they could also be directly affected by circulating factors.…”

“…In the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) we identified a specialized subpopulation of neurons that express both HSD2 and MR (Geerling et al, 2006). The distribution of these neurons overlaps a blood-brain barrier-deficient (BBB-deficient) zone within the NTS (Gross et al, 1990). This location could allow them special access to blood-borne aldosterone, which has been reported to penetrate the BBB much less than other steroids (Pardridge and Mietus, 1979;Funder and Myles, 1996).…”

“…PGH 2 in turn is converted to PGE 2 by the enzyme PGE 2 synthase (Thoren et al 2003). In addition to localized formation in the CNS, PGE 2 is synthesized outside the CNS and can reach NTS neurons because this area of the brain lacks a complete bloodbrain barrier (Gross et al 1990). …”
