Microwave ablation is as effective as radiofrequency ablation for very-early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: BackgroundPercutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a first-line treatment for very-early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), whereas the efficacy of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) for very-early-stage HCC remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify this issue by comparing the safety and efficacy of percutaneous MWA with percutaneous RFA in treating very-early-stage HCC.MethodsClinical data of 460 patients who were diagnosed with very-early-stage HCC and treated with percutaneous MWA… Show more

“…For studies with duplicate data, reports with the lower number of patients and incomplete data were excluded. Finally, four RCTs [30][31][32][33] and 10 cohort studies [25,[34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42] with 1816 patients were included. All four RCTs focused on percutaneous ablation.…”

“…PRT was carried out using the same methodology as PAT. PRP was proceeded using an MTC-3 microwave generator (2,450 MHz, 1-100 W) at 80-100 W for 3-5 min automatically with a safety margin of 1 cm (20). Supportive information related to inclusion of patients for standardized performance of the procedures is described in the Supplementary Material.…”
