A simple protocol for microwave-assisted solvent-free oxidation of hydrobenzoins to benzoins or benzils, benzoins to benzils, and alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones was reported by Khurana et al 1489 They observed that hydrobenzoin was selectively oxidized to give benzoin when exposed to microwaves for 20 s using 2 equiv of NBS and 3 equiv of neutral Al 2 O 3 (Scheme 538). When the reaction was exposed to microwaves for 2 min, it produced benzil in quantitative yield.…”

Use of Bromine and Bromo-Organic Compounds in Organic Synthesis

Bromination is one of the most important transformations in organic synthesis and can be carried out using bromine and many other bromo compounds. Use of molecular bromine in organic synthesis is well-known. However, due to the hazardous nature of bromine, enormous growth has been witnessed in the past several decades for the development of solid bromine carriers. This review outlines the use of bromine and different bromo-organic compounds in organic synthesis. The applications of bromine, a total of 107 bromo-organic compounds, 11 other brominating agents, and a few natural bromine sources were incorporated. The scope of these reagents for various organic transformations such as bromination, cohalogenation, oxidation, cyclization, ring-opening reactions, substitution, rearrangement, hydrolysis, catalysis, etc. has been described briefly to highlight important aspects of the bromo-organic compounds in organic synthesis.

The use of solvents in organic synthesis is today one of the main causes of pollution and risk for humans and the environment. Although many green solvents have been recently developed, the best solvent is still no solvent. The use of microwaves (MWs) for heating reaction mixtures provides an efficient tool to perform organic reactions in the absence of solvents. The combination of solvent-free protocols and microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) is therefore one the most challenging tools to abide by the 12 green chemistry principles. This overview reports on the recent results, benefits and challenges of the synergy between MW heating and neat reactions. Important milestones of organic chemistry such as oxidation, alkylation, cross-coupling, Knoevenagel, Claisen and Michael addition reactions, together with innovative sustainable organic chemistry reactions such as borrowing hydrogen protocols, are discussed with critical attention to their benefits compared to conventional heating and the use of ‘hidden’ solvents employed during work-up and purification steps.
