Mid‐infrared spectroscopy on skin using a silver halide fibre probe in vivo

Abstract: Using the particular light guide, we were able to measure for the first time the effects of lip care products on lips directly. Furthermore, water binding and glycerol content of the skin could be determined simultaneously, as well as the replenishment of lipids by lipid-enriched bath oil.

“…They can be especially useful for evaluation of samples that cannot be analyzed using XRD, such as very small mineral amounts, and intact tissues and thin tissue sections. Moreover, when combined with portable Raman and FT-IR spectrometers using fiber optics probes, [57][58][59] these approaches may be useful for in situ evaluation of bone mineral crystallinity in a variety of scenarios. The vibrational spectroscopy approaches shown in this study can be readily implemented in many biomineralization, archeological and orthopedic studies, potentially contributing to the bone research field and for forensic and clinically relevant applications.…”

“…In addition to TED-FTIR, new IR techniques have been introduced such as opto-thermal radiometry and mid-IR spectroscopy. 60,61 In contrast to FTIR-ATR techniques, Raman spectroscopy represents a more recent in-vivo approach for non-invasive determination of percutaneous penetration of chemicals. Development of confocal Raman microspectroscopy (CRM) is of particular importance for wider application of this technique.…”

“…Our previous works have illustrated the feasibility of discrimination of human kidney , or colon tumors using near-infrared (NIR), IR, and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as a LED-based sensor equipped with a fiber probe . Although ATR spectroscopy is not optimal for the analysis of solid objects, its application for the analysis of biological tissues by fiber-based probes is one of the most important exceptions …”
