Middle Devonian trilobites from the Mont d’Haurs section in Givet, France, with two new species of Dechenella

Abstract: Recent investigation of the historical Mont d’Haurs section near Givet yielded numerous trilobites from Middle Devonian carbonate deposits. The trilobite fauna described in the present paper comprises a number of taxa from the basal Givetian, including two new ones: Dechenella givetensis sp. n.; Dechenella calxensis sp. n.; Dechenella ziegleri Struve, 1992; Goldius cf. capitellum (Archinal, 1994); and Nyterops cf. hollandi van Viersen, 2007a. This fauna confirms the previously recognised taxonomic diversity pa… Show more

“…Ecophenotypic plasticity may be also a plausible explanation. For example the trilobite species Dechenella ziegleri Struve, of the Terres d'Haurs formation (Hubert ; Bignon & Crônier ) is encountered both in the biostromal lagoon (Table ; environment 6), and the median (Table ; environment 7) and internal ramps (Table ; environment 9) or the ostracod Polonellia tertia Krömmelbein, mostly found in open marine environments may occur in the algal euphotic zone (Casier et al . ,b).…”

“…A great number of nutrition modes are possible within trilobites (Fortey & Owens 1999). The genus Dechenella corresponds to more than 90% of the specimens found in the Mont d'Haurs section and they have been reported as detritivores (Bignon & Crônier 2011). Many feeding habits exist within gastropods too, predators, filter feeders, parasites, herbivores (Lecointre & Le Guyader 2006).…”
