“…Furthermore, there are currently no unambiguous occurrences of Euhelopodidae outside of East Asia (see D 'Emic, 2012;. However, given that Euhelopodidae is here recovered as the most basal clade within Somphospondyli, and that the Mengyin Formation (which yielded the clade specifier Euhelopus) is now thought to be earliest Cretaceous (Berriasian-Valanginian) in age (Xu & Li, 2015), a close relationship between Australodocus and this clade might not be so unlikely. Furthermore, teeth from the Barremian of Spain possess a morphology that is otherwise only known in East Asian Cretaceous sauropods (Canudo et al, 2002), including Euhelopus .…”

“…Bivalve stratigraphy suggested Berriasian-Barremian (Ma, 1994) whereas tetrapod faunas have been interpreted to indicate Barremian-Aptian age (Wu, Brinkman & Lu, 1994; Dong, 1992; Averianov & Skutschas, 2000; Barrett & Wang, 2007). More recently, detrital zircon and U-Pb zircon dating yielded an age between 145–136 Ma which corresponds to the Berriasian-Valanginian interval (basal Cretaceous, Xu & Li, 2015).…”

“…The age of this formation has been contested and it was initially regarded Upper Jurassic and then subsequently interpreted as Barremian or Aptian (e.g., Dong, 1992; Wu, Brinkman & Lu, 1994; Barrett & Wang, 2007; Wilson & Upchurch, 2009). There is growing consensus that the Mengyin Formation is Lower Cretaceous and recent zircon dating has resulted in an age of 145–136 Ma which is equivalent to the Berriasian-Valanginian interval of the basal Cretaceous (Xu & Li, 2015). The Mengyin Formation has yielded two turtles, the iconic bizarre species with a pair of lateral spines on the carapace, Sinemys lens Wiman, 1930 and the enigmatic Sinochelys applanata Wiman, 1930 (Hirayama, Brinkman & Danilov, 2000; Sukhanov, 2000).…”

“…The continuous Early Cretaceous sedimentary strata in this basin provided an ideal object for studying the differential exhumation process of Jiaodong Peninsula. A lot of papers about the provenance of the Early Cretaceous sediments in the Jiaolai Basin have been published in recent years (Huo et al, ; Xie et al, ; Xu & Li, ). These published detrital zircon data consistently suggest that the Jiaobei Terrane and the Sulu orogenic belt are the major source areas for the Early Cretaceous sedimentary strata in the Jiaolai Basin.…”
