Migraine Is Associated With Livedo Reticularis: A Prospective Study

Abstract: In women, migraine is associated with stroke, coronary artery disease, deep venous thrombosis, as well as livedo reticularis, a dermatopathy which has been pathologically linked to cerebral vasculopathy. Whether migraineurs with livedo reticularis compose a subset at higher risk of thrombosis, including stroke, deserves further investigation.

“…LR may be more commonly present in patients with migraine than in the general population. 26 A chart review of patients with migraine headaches demonstrated that patients with both migraines and LR were more likely to have had a stroke. 23 These results suggest that LR can be used as a marker for patients with migraine who may be at risk of future strokes and, thus, development of Sneddon's syndrome.…”

“…Sneddon's syndrome is characterised by the association of cerebrovascular events with widespread livedo racemosa [96].SS was first described by Champion and Rook in 1960 [20] and was named after the British dermatologist I. B. Sneddon who reported the combination of livedo racemosa with symptoms of cerebrovascular defect in six patients in 1965 [92].…”

“…The discovery of migraine's association with a number of other vascular conditions such as Raynaud's phenomenon (3), variant angina (4), pre-eclampsia (5), and livedo reticularis (6), has fueled speculation for a pivotal role of the endothelium in migraine pathogenesis and in migraineassociated stroke (7).…”
