“…The southern Indian state of Kerala was severely impacted in 2018 by the most extreme monsoon rainfall since 1924 (Agarwal, 2018;Megha et al, 2019;Sajinkumar et al, 2022;Sankar, 2018;Vishnu et al, 2020Vishnu et al, , 2019. During this monsoon season, from June 1 to August 28, Kerala received a cumulative rainfall that was 42% in excess of the annual average (Sudheer et al, 2019), which triggered thousands of landslides and extreme floods.…”

“…Floods eroded valley sides, resulting in additional slope failures. During this extreme rainfall event, 4,728 landslides were triggered (Hao et al, 2020), which affected more than 1,200 villages with a population of 5.4 million people, leading to huge property losses and more than 440 fatalities (Duncombe, 2018;Mishra et al, 2018;Pooja et al, 2021;Sajinkumar et al, 2022;UNDP, 2018;Vishnu et al, 2019). Except for the predominantly flat and flooded district of Alappuzha, all the other 13 districts (Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram) were impacted by landslides, of which Idukki district was the most badly affected.…”

“…Since 2018, the noteworthy feature of the monsoon has been that it triggers landslides during the sporadic high-intensity rainfall (cf. Vishnu et al 2019Vishnu et al , 2020Yunus et al 2021;Sajinkumar et al 2022). Though several studies have been conducted in this region, and measures suggested were not adopted, we present here specific omnipresent reasons that facilitate landslides in this region.…”

“…Previous studies have consistently shown that frequent flooding has substantial impacts on both socioeconomic factors and ecological balance. In the context of the Indian subcontinent, floods are one of the most widespread, catastrophic, and frequent natural hazards (Sajinkumar et al, 2022; Senan et al, 2023; Vishnu et al, 2019; Vishnu et al, 2020). As a significant portion of the Indian population lives in cities, they are highly affected by frequent floods and landslides.…”
