AbstractThe investigation of prehistoric human migration from the measurement of Sr-isotope ratios within preserved tissue is critically dependent on the preservation of biogenic Sr. A number of recent studies have involved isotope ratio measurements on samples of archaeological tooth and bone, but doubt remains as to the extent of diagenesis in various skeletal tissues and the effectiveness of procedures designed to decontaminate them. We have compared Sr abundance and isotope ratios in enamel and dentine from archaeological teeth in order to assess the integrity of the biogenic Sr signal preserved within the respective tissues. We conclude that enamel appears, in most cases, to be a reliable reservoir of biogenic Sr, but that dentine, and by implication bone, is not. The diagenesis of dentine is highly variable even between burials within a single site. For the majority of teeth, dentine diagenesis was not simply by addition of soil-derived Sr, but involved substantial, sometimes complete, turnover of the original biogenic material. We suggest that, for most of the samples investigated, current decontamination techniques may not have been effective in isolating biogenic Sr from dentine. Similar considerations are likely to apply to archaeological and fossil bone, but the possibility arises to use dentine and enamel measurements to assess the effectiveness of decontamination procedures which may then be used for bone.

Chemical tests in bioarcheology focus primarily on the analysis of human and animal remains, which originate at different points in time and space. These are mainly bones and teeth but also snail-and cockleshells as well as the remnants of soft tissues, if preserved, at archeological sites. This branch of science has been developing rapidly for over ten years. Initially, the researchers centred their interest on the reconstruction of paleodiets of our ancestors by studying trace elements. Currently, we notice the dynamic development of methodology based on the application of stable carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and strontium isotopes in examining the diet, migrations Chemical signals and reconstruction of life strategies from ancient human bones and teethproblems and perspectives Krzysztof SzostekDepartment of Anthropology, Institute of Zoology, Jagiellonian University, Ingardena 6, 30-060 Kraków, Poland; E-mail: szosy@wp.plAbStrAct Chemical analyses of historical and prehistoric bone material provide us with a complex body of knowledge in bioarcheological studies. These can be used for reconstructing diet, migration, climate changes and the weaning process. The analysis of enamel, dentin and bones allows researchers to gather data on life strategies of an individual by retrospectively tracing his ontogenetic phases. This is made possible through knowledge of the mineralization periods of permanent and deciduous teeth while simultaneously taking account of differences between enamel, dentin and bone remodelling rates, dependent on the age of the individual. Yet, the large interpretative potential of isotope analyses of bone material is severely limited by diagenesis. The accurate recording of diagenetic changes in historical human bone material is a current main trend in bioarcheological research. Today, a highly specialised set of research tools is used for verifying whether bones unearthed at archeological sites are suitable for isotope tests. Isotope determinations are pivotal in this research as reconstructions of paleodiets or migrations of our ancestors can be based only on material that has been maintained intact in sufficient proportions post mortem.

RESUMENSe presenta el hallazgo de un vaso campaniforme que por sus características ha de ser considerado como un ejemplar único en el panorama peninsular, descubierto en un enterramiento individual junto a otro vaso de Estilo Marítimo en el Túmulo de La Sima (Miño de Medinaceli, Soria, España). El análisis de la técnica decorativa empleada en su ornamentación permite realizar ciertas consideraciones acerca de la técnica supuestamente incisa aplicada en los campaniformes ibéricos de Estilo Ciempozuelos. Su decoración de líneas horizontales y paralelas a lo largo del vaso y su peculiar forma tienen sus mejores paralelos en la Bretaña francesa, y en última instancia en la Cerámica cordada, en el contexto de los sistemas de intercambios a larga distancia por los que circularon las cerámicas campaniformes y sus objetos acompañantes (orfebrería áurea sobre todo) entre la Bretaña francesa y el centro de Portugal, atravesando el interior de la Península Ibérica.
