Migration: Internal

Abstract

Emanating from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, the literature on internal migration is diverse and broad‐ranging. Migration studies can be further differentiated by methods, levels of analysis, and theoretical approaches. Against that complex background, this entry provides an introductory review of the internal migration literature. After discussing the main data sources and measures of migration, the entry reviews key research themes, including variations in the level of internal migration between countries and over time, the impact of migration on population redistribution, the selectivity of migration, and its impact on life outcomes.
