In this research paper, a well‐performing solar pump at the minimum cost of project life is designed and installed. Initially, the capacity of submersible pumps and discharge have been determined based on the water requirement of the crop and the size of the field. The total number of solar panels, inverter size, and motor pump system have been designed based on the law of conservation of energy. The two optimization techniques genetic algorithm (GA) and response surface methodology (RSM) have been used for analyzing the pump performance parameters and total cost. The GA tool has been used to determine the optimum tilt angle on which responses namely solar flux, solar panel efficiency, exergy, and pump efficiency should be maximum. Moreover, the performance of the solar pump at the optimum tilt angle has been compared with the 28° fixed tilt angle (latitute of location). For the experimental study solar pump experimental setup of 5 hp power has been installed in Faculty of Engineering and Technology, MJP Rohilkhand University at 28.36°N, 79.43°E. The total cost of the solar pump has been optimized with the help of RSM based on the discharge and head of the solar pump. The new optimization approach reduced the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) from 0.041 to 0.035 $/kWh and the payback period is reduced from 4 to 3 years. The annual increment in average solar flux and overall efficiency has been recorded to be from 606 to 697 W/m2 and 11% to 14% respectively.

A conventional DC-DC converter is not viable for power conditioning in standalone solar photovoltaic applications. Switching losses are the primary reason for the poor performance of conventional DC-DC converters. To mitigate the issues in conventional DC-DC converters, a high efficient high gain (HEHG) DC-DC converter is designed and developed in this research work. Modified HEHG converter utilizes the passive components switched capacitors, coupled inductor, and resistor capacitor (RC) snubber circuit for minimizing the switching losses and improving the overall power conversion efficiency of the solar photovoltaic (SPV) system. In addition, a modified D-sweep maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is in-corporate into this system to improve the tracking efficiency of the SPV system. HEHG for a standalone system is designed using MATLAB/Simulink environment and developed the hard-ware prototype. As a part of the validation, real-time testing is carried out and compares the performance of the HEHG converter with a traditional DC-DC converter. The theoretical efficiency of the HEHG converter is 96.01%, and the real-time efficiency is 95.62%. Found that theoretical and practical values of performance parameters are closely tallying.

The efficient extraction of solar PV power is crucial to maximize utilization, even in rapidly changing environmental conditions. The increasing energy demands highlight the importance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for cost-effective energy production. However, traditional PV systems with bypass diodes at their output terminals often produce multiple power peaks, leading to significant power losses if the optimal combination of voltage and current is not achieved. To address this issue, algorithms capable of finding the highest value of a function are employed. Since the PV power output is a complex function with multiple local maximum power points (LMPPs), conventional algorithms struggle to handle partial shading conditions (PSC). As a result, nature-inspired algorithms, also known as metaheuristic algorithms, are used to maximize the power output of solar PV arrays. In this study, we introduced a novel metaheuristic algorithm called atomic orbital search for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under PSC. The primary motivation behind this research is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of MPPT techniques in challenging scenarios. The proposed algorithm offers several advantages, including higher efficiency, shorter tracking time, reduced output variations, and improved duty ratios, resulting in faster convergence to the maximum power point (MPP). To evaluate the algorithm’s performance, we conducted extensive experiments using Typhoon HIL and compared it with other existing algorithms commonly employed for MPPT. The results clearly demonstrated that the proposed atomic orbital search algorithm outperformed the alternatives in terms of rapid convergence and efficient MPP tracking, particularly for complex shading patterns. This makes it a suitable choice for developing an MPP tracker applicable in various settings, such as industrial, commercial, and residential applications. In conclusion, our research addresses the pressing need for effective MPPT methods in solar PV systems operating under challenging conditions. The atomic orbital search algorithm showcases its potential in significantly improving the efficiency and performance of MPPT, ultimately contributing to the optimization of solar energy extraction and utilization.
