Mild Asthma and Chronic Bronchitis Seem to Influence Functional Exercise Capacity: A Multi-Case Control Study

Abstract: Background: In the Genes Environment Interaction in Respiratory Diseases population-based multi-case control study, we investigated whether asthma, chronic bronchitis (CB) and rhinitis were associated with a reduced 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), and whether the 6MWD determinants were similar for subjects with/without respiratory diseases. Methods: Cases of asthma (n = 360), CB (n = 120), rhinitis (n = 203) and controls (no respiratory diseases: n = 302) were recruited. The variation in the 6MWD across the gro… Show more

“…Subjects with a FEV 1 /FVC <70% or <LLN underwent the bronchodilator challenge test and were invited (if eligible) to undergo the methacholine challenge test. Skin prick tests to 14 common allergens were carried out as described elsewhere , and atopy was defined as having a >3 mm reaction.…”

“…Comparing mild asthma patients and healthy subjects, Marcon et al found that the former had a shorter walking distance although not reaching the minimal clinical important difference value (À17.1 m, p ¼ 0.02) [80]. Not surprisingly, a more significant difference is seen with difficult-to-treat and severe asthma patients [75], in particular if patients are treated with oral corticosteroids [32].…”

“…One estimated minimal clinical difference for the 6MWT distance corresponds to 26 m [ 34 ]. In absence of sarcoidosis-specific references, we suggest according to Marcon [ 35 ], a 6MWT distance of approximately 600 m (SD 80). Assuming a 2-sided type I error of 2.5% and a power of 90%, the overall sample size on the basis of a paired t test is 121.…”
