MIMO Cooperation Schemes for Uplink of Future Railway Communication Systems

Abstract: In this paper, we consider the uplink of a railway communication system with onboard mobile relays. Each onboard relay communicates with two cooperating base stations at the ends of the section along which the train is moving. Each carriage is equipped with two distinct antenna arrays. We design transmit coding schemes distributed between the antenna arrays and we apply receive macrodiversity. Simulations show that the proposed schemes enable to maintain transmission quality and throughput as the carriage move… Show more

“…This has led to the emergence of significant industrial and scientific projects by researchers and engineers worldwide to accomplish augmentation in ITS [ 2 ]. In the current era of IoT, every vehicle that has access to the Internet can share data within the network is referred to as an IOV, which enables smart city functionalities [ 3 ]. The IOV heterogeneous framework has enormous potential, and capability, and is now peering over the horizon to supervise and steer vehicles for an abundance of applications [ 4 ].…”

“…The application of recent cellular standards (long-term evolution (LTE) or even 5G-new radio (5G-NR) [5]) to future railway communication networks defines linear cells, delimited each by two remote radio heads (RRH) that are connected to the same baseband unit pool (BBU). Cooperation between both RRH for transmission and reception is thus possible and macrodiversity [4], [6] is particularly efficient to avoid disastrous degradation of the throughput as the train moves along the section. In this paper, we focus on the downlink and we consider the case when two trains pass each other.…”
