In this contribution, we present the results of a measurement campaign targeting at system level evaluation of vehicular multiple-input-multiple-out (MIMO) antennas. Our measurements are performed on a test track served by a Long Term Evolution (LTE) base station operating in the 800 MHz band. We show system level evaluation results obtained by using two reference monopole antennas and two automotive qualified, integrated prototype antenna systems. The presented results are gathered in line-of-sight (LOS) as well as non-LOS conditions. As vehicular antenna systems are limited by the available integration space, we analyze the specific impact of antenna decoupling on system level performance. System level performance metrics include parameters such as ergodic capacity and condition number of the MIMO channel matrix. We achieve antenna decoupling for the reference monopoles by increasing their separation. In case of the integrated antenna system we use a decoupling branch to decrease antenna coupling and correlation at the measurement frequency. We discuss a system level evaluation process for ranking antenna systems based on channel specific parameters. The applicability of the process for MIMO system performance evaluation is shown with a comparison of an integrated antenna system with the described reference antenna system.

The 3GPP LTE standard for mobile broadband includes multi-antenna transmission modes that improve performance, both in terms of coverage, spectral efficiency and peak throughput. The antenna system design, both at the eNB and at the UE is critical to a well performing system; it should be designed with the intended performance profile in mind. Field trials were performed in order to investigate the relative performance of several four and two transmit antenna setups in an LTE system. In general, multi-antenna technology gave substantial performance gains over single antenna transmission. A closely spaced co-polarized configuration gave the best performance for users with poor channel quality while dualpolarized and well-spaced antenna configurations gave better performance for users with good channel quality. The trial also shows that UE antenna polarization is an important parameter that must be kept in mind when designing the eNB antenna system.

The fast evolution in wireless communication standards and enhancement in cellular applications has created an exponential rise in the data rate requirement over the past few decades. The next generation wireless standards, therefore, need not only to provide ultra high data rates with minimum latency, but also to support diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Filterbank multicarrier (FBMC) scheme provides quite a few advantages over the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for future wire- less networks. In order to achieve adaptive throughput and diverse service quality requirements under varying channel conditions, a link adaptation algorithm for FBMC scheme is proposed in this paper. The aim is to provide the dynamic selection of optimum parameters resulting in diverse modes of operation to ensure the desired and/or best available communication service quality. The proposed link adaptation algorithm incorporates the parameters of required data rate, available channel condition and QoS demand, and dynamically allocates the appropriate FBMC transmission parameters. The proposed scheme has been evaluated for AWGN as well as multipath fading SUI channel models. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm successfully achieves the desired service quality subject to the availability of suitable channel conditions and is also superior to the existing algorithms in terms of block error rate and effective throughput.
