Mineral composition of different basil (Ocimum spp.) genotypes

Abstract: This experiment investigated mineral composition of 13 basil genotypes (Ocimum spp.) in order to find varieties supporting human dietary intake of essential minerals and to evaluate basil genotypes which could serve for herbal production as raw material in pharmaceutical or food processing industry. In addition, this study tested a potential risk of the accumulation of heavy metals during the commercial production of basil on agricultural soil. Mineral composition of basil genotypes was found to be in associat… Show more

“…Our results showed a significant cultivar-dependent response for mineral accumulation, in agreement with the findings of Licina et al (2014) , who compared the mineral composition of different basil genotypes. The positive lower nitrate accumulation recorded in “Aroma 2” emphasizes the genotype’s key role in accumulating this potentially risky dietary compound for human health ( Colla et al, 2018 ).…”

“…This was reflected in the relatively high standard deviations and the remarkable differences between the mean and the median of the elemental contents (Tables 5-6). Similar results were reported by other studies for different spices [17,19,23,[25][26]. This variability is usually explained in terms of the effects of various ecosystems on the elemental levels at different regions.…”

“…The results are in harmony with previous studies [71][72][73], which mentioned that aroma components of basil oil differ according to cultivation practices, chemotype, and season effect. Additionally, the detected essential oil compounds by GC/MS analysis are in harmony with previous studies [74,75].…”
