Minimally invasive versus conventional surgery of the ascending aorta and root: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Summary Limited uptake of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of the aorta hinders assessment of its efficacy compared to median sternotomy (MS). The objective of this systematic review is to compare operative and perioperative outcomes for MIS versus MS. Online databases Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched from inception until July 2018. Both randomized and observational studies of patients undergoing aortic root, ascending aorta or aortic arch surger… Show more

“…However, these studies had significant heterogeneity related to procedure types, patient and study characteristics, incision types, and study periods. 7 , 10 To further complicate matters, the few studies focusing solely on Bentall procedures are hampered by less recent data, absence of an FS control group, or small numbers of patients. 3 , 11 , 12 To compare, we report postoperative outcomes in a contemporary cohort of 97 patients with similar baseline characteristics undergoing UMS and FS Bentall procedures performed by a single surgeon.…”
