Avoiding signaling congestion is a key aspect in location management of cellular networks. The signaling load in this context corresponds to the use of location update and paging messages for tacking user equipments (UEs).Signaling congestion may occur due to many UEs behaving in a similar manner, e.g., massive and simultaneous UE mobility in a train movement scenario. For Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, location management can be based on the use of tracking area lists (TALs), each being a list containing multiple tracking areas (TAs). In this paper, the scheme of using TALs with overlapping TAs is applied for signaling congestion mitigation. One or multiple TALs that potentially overlap are allocated to each cell, and the TALs are assigned to the UEs that make their location updates in the cell. We derive linear programming formulations for finding the optimal proportional use of overlapping TALs for congestion avoidance. The main advantage of our approach is that it does not require the collection of detailed UE mobility information apart from what is available to the network. We report numerical results for realistic scenarios. The optimization approach yields * Corresponding author. Abstract. To reduce the transmitted power of base stations in mobile wireless networks, continuous cell zooming algorithm is a feasible dynamic cell zooming algorithm. In this algorithm, location management is required in order to know the locations of users. Movement-based Update is not compatible and the application of Convention Periodic Update (CPU) scheme in continuous cell zooming algorithm can lead to a high signaling cost. Thus, aiming to highlight the effectiveness of newly proposed location update schemes, Time-Adaptive Periodic Update (TAPU) and Location-Adaptive Periodic Update (LAPU), a simulation-based performance analysis is conducted. Applying in continuous cell zooming algorithm, the performances of TAPU and LAPU are compared to that of Convention Periodic Update (CPU) scheme in terms of transmitted power ratio, outage ratio and the number of update messages. The performances of TAPU and LAPU are analyzed in a network with different number of users and in a network with different average moving speeds of users. The results show that compared to CPU, both TAPU and LAPU have no significant effect on power saving capability of continuous cell zooming algorithm in every scenario. Meanwhile, LAPU and TAPU give a significant reduction of update messages in every scenario. In terms of QoS effect, LAPU gives approximately the same outage ratio as CPU and a higher outage ratio occurs in TAPU.

Abstract-In this paper, we propose a stochastic model to compute the optimal update boundary for the distance-based location update algorithm. The proposed model is flexible and captures some of the real characteristics in the wireless cellular environment. The model can adapt to arbitrary cell topologies in which the number of neighboring base stations at different locations may vary. The cell residence time can follow general distributions which captures the fact that the mobile user may spend more time at certain locations than others. The model also incorporates the concept of a trip in which the mobile user may follow a particular path to a destination. For implementation, the decision of location update can be made by a simple table lookup. Numerical results indicate that the proposed model provides a more accurate update boundary in real environment than that derived from a hexagonal cell configuration with a random walk movement pattern. The proposed model allows the network to maintain a better balance between the processing incurred due to location update and the radio bandwidth utilized for paging between call arrivals.
