Minor Millets as a Central Element for Sustainably Enhanced Incomes, Empowerment, and Nutrition in Rural India

Abstract: Abstract:Minor millets comprise a group of cereal species that are genetically diverse and adapted to a range of marginal growing conditions where major cereals such as wheat, rice, and maize are relatively unsuccessful. Millets require few inputs and withstand severe biotic and abiotic stresses. They are also more nutritious than major cereals. Despite these advantages, neglect in several arenas has resulted in a steady decline in the cultivation of minor millets in India over the past few decades. As part of… Show more

“…The M.S Swaminathan Foundation has requested an amended policy to investigate small millets and their potential role for climate-smart agriculture [88]. The report by Padulosi et al (2015) also showed the importance of minor millets including PM in economic and nutritional sustainability of rural India. The majority of the Indian population is economically unable to afford an expensive balanced diet [89].…”

“…Development and further refinement of dryland crop production approaches and strategic substitutions of water demanding crops with drought adapted crops can enhance the sustainability of future agricultural production in regions without a reliable supply of water [3,4]. Several species of millets are cultivated primarily in marginal agronomic environments due to their high-water use efficiency and can be grown in arid environments ranging from 200 mm to over 500 mm of average annual rainfall [1].…”

“…Among small millets, finger millet is the main crop (>80% of the total small millets produced in India) cultivated over 1.3 Mha in India, with an annual production of 1.5 Mt (global annual production of finger millet is 4.5 Mt). In contrast, the remaining area under small millets (0.97 Mha) has produced 0.46 Mt (Padulosi et al, 2015).…”

“…The Panicoideae and Chloridoideae subfamily consisting of the small millets were shaded in yellow and green, respectively (color figure available online). area under small millets including finger millet cultivation in India is roughly 2.3 Mha, which is 12% of the area under coarse cereal cultivation (Padulosi et al, 2015). Among small millets, finger millet is the main crop (>80% of the total small millets produced in India) cultivated over 1.3 Mha in India, with an annual production of 1.5 Mt (global annual production of finger millet is 4.5 Mt).…”
