Miocene to Messinian deformation and hydrothermal activity in a pre-Alpine basement massif of the French western Alps: new U-Th-Pb and argon ages from the Lauzière massif

Abstract: U-Pb and Th-Pb dating of monazite from hydrothermal quartz veins ("Alpine veins") from the Lauzière massif (North Belledonne) together with Ar/Ar ages of adularias from the same veins constrain the age of the last tectono-metamorphic events that affected the External Crystalline Massifs (ECM). Ages obtained are surprisingly young. The study of the structural context of the veins combined with our chronological data, allow us to propose a tectonic scenario of the northern ECM for the 15-5 Ma period, which was p… Show more

“…The accuracy of the method was verified by analyses of reference zircon Plešovice (338.2 ± 1.7 Ma) and OG1 (3469.8 ± 8.9 Ma), and the reference monazite Moacir (506.3 ± 2.5 Ma) -see Appendix 1. These ages are, within error, identical to the quoted TIMS values of 337.13 ± 0.37 Ma (Sláma et al, 2008), 3465.4 ± 0.6 Ma (Stern et al, 2009), and 504.3 ± 0.2 Ma (Gasquet et al, 2010), respectively. The data were plotted using the software ISOPLOT (Ludwig, 2001).…”

“…Moacir for monazite (Gasquet et al 2010); Weinsberg for xenotime (Klötzli et al 2007) and R10 for rutile (Zack et al 2011). Both standards-LAC titanite (Pedersen et al 1989) and Bona and Tera allanite (Gregory et al 2007)-available in Geosciences Rennes contain a non-negligible proportion of common Pb.…”

“…Time-resolved signals were carefully inspected to verify the presence of perturbations related to inclusions, fractures or mixing of different age domains. Laser-induced elemental fractionation and mass bias were corrected using matrix-matched external monazite standard (Moacir monazite: Seydoux-Guillaume et al, 2002a, 2002b considering the values, re-calibrated for isotopic disequilibrium, reported by Gasquet et al (2010). In the analytical run eight to nine spots of the external standard were analysed.…”
