miRNA in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas: promising but still distant future of personalized oncology

Joanna Kozłowska-Masłoń,
Kacper Guglas,
Tomasz Kolenda
et al.

Abstract: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common and fatal cancers worldwide. Lack of appropriate preventive screening tests, late detection, and high heterogeneity of these tumors are the main reasons for the unsatisfactory effects of therapy and, consequently, unfavorable outcomes for patients. An opportunity to improve the quality of diagnostics and treatment of this group of cancers are microRNAs (miRNAs) — molecules with a great potential both as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. This rev… Show more

“…A comprehensive investigation of tumor microenvironment (TME) increases the number of possible diagnostic and therapeutic targets [3]. Recent oncological research focuses on various types of potential predictive factors, such as microRNA [4], cancer-associated fibroblasts [5], or neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [6]. The current article presents a promising group of molecules with the potential to influence future personalized oncological treatment.…”

“…Increasingly, more types of RNA and their functions are being discovered and tested for suitability in medicine as diagnostic or therapeutic measures. They are derived from different sources of biomaterials [15][16][17][18][19]. The uses of RNA-seq data in research are presented in Figure 2.…”
