“…The new AMS radiocarbon dates on mammoths from northeastern Germany fit well into the known colonisation pattern based on other directly dated mammoth remains, which show a continuous distribution of mammoth in the Late Weichselian moraine areas of northern Europe (Berglund et al, 1976;Aaris-Sørensen et al, 1990;Ukkonen et al, 1999Ukkonen et al, , 2008Lougas et al, 2002) before the second expansion of the Scandinavian ice sheet. The three most recent dates from this study are the first records of mammoths in the eastern part of the European Lowlands from the last millennia before the advance of the ice sheet in this region.…”

“…the collapse of the tundra-steppe biome, human influence, at least in some regions of Europe, should not be underestimated (Stuart, 2005). In this context, the Late Weichselian moraine areas of northern Europe are of a special interest, because in the eastern part they were recolonised after deglaciation, as is demonstrated by dates on mammoth younger than the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) sensu stricto (Ukkonen et al, 1999(Ukkonen et al, , 2008Lougas et al, 2002). This paper for the first time presents radiocarbon dates on mammoths from northeastern Germany and suggests directions for further palaeoecological studies on Mammuthus primigenius.…”

“…Ukkonen et al, 2007;Tütken et al, 2007, Arppe andKarhu, 2010), and the large body-size of mammoth is likely to have made them less susceptible to the isotopic effects of local humidity and physiological effects (Tütken et al, 2007).…”

Working within this context, this study aims to reconstruct the climatic background at Kraków Spadzista Street (B) through oxygen isotopic analysis of mammoth tooth remains found at the site, and relate the results to the question of human occupation of the northern Plains and the D-O cycles.…”
