Misery Has More Company Than People Think: Underestimating the Prevalence of Others’ Negative Emotions

Abstract: Four studies document underestimations of the prevalence of others’ negative emotions, and suggest causes and correlates of these erroneous perceptions. In Study 1A, participants reported that their negative emotions were more private or hidden than their positive emotions; in Study 1B, participants underestimated the peer prevalence of common negative, but not positive, experiences described in Study 1A. In Study 2, people underestimated negative emotions and overestimated positive emotions even for well-know… Show more

“…44 This has implications for communication style and interpersonal understanding in the surgery. Also, dentists may not be completely effective at hiding their emotions as patients may well be able to 'read' the fleeting micro-expressions which occur before conscious control becomes effective.…”

“…In this case, pluralistic ignorance favors the conservation of social harmony. Jordan et al (2011) found that people evaluate positive emotions of their peers compared with their own more accurately than they evaluate negative emotions. This shows that, in general, negative feelings tend to be more solitary than positive ones, and that is why people not only tend to omit but also to evaluate the social norm poorly.…”

(Kim & Lee, 2011;Wang, Jackson, Gaskin, & Wang, 2014 …”
