Mitigating Large Vibrations of Stayed Cables in Wind and Rain Hazards

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental investigation of stayed cable vibrations in dry-wind and rain-wind coupling hazards. To mitigate large vibrations of the cable, the use of spiral wires wrapped around the cable is proposed. By testing two cable models in a wind tunnel in dry and rain conditions for different yaw angles and wind speeds, the effectiveness of using the spiral wires to mitigate large vibrations is clarified. Finally, the paper provides a further understanding of the complex mechanism of wind-ind… Show more

“…When doing model training, an objective function is needed, and the algorithm is solved by optimizing this objective function. In solving classification or regression problems using neural networks, the loss function (cost function) is usually used as its objective function [4]. The loss function is used to evaluate the extent to which the predicted value of the model is different from the true value, and the better the loss function is, the better the performance of the model is usually [5].…”

“…Traditional analysis methods are difficult to establish a clear physical relationship between influencing factors and wind induced disasters [3]. The development of data mining and machine learning technology has provided new ideas for revealing the mechanism of wind induced disasters in conductors [4]. Data mining and machine learning technology are currently effective means to solve problems such as complex mechanisms and complex influencing factors [5].…”

“…Researchers have tried ways to modify the surface configuration of steel cables and achieved great success. Typical approaches involved altering cable surface roughness 19 , 20 , incorporating surface indentations 21 , 22 , helical or longitudinal ridges 22 26 , grooved textures 27 and wire meshes 28 30 . However, the above efforts all concentrated on steel cables.…”
