Mitral annular calcification and brown tumor of the rib in a child with chronic renal failure

Abstract: Mitral annular calcification and liquefaction necrosis of this lesion mimicking intracardiac tumor because of secondary hyperparathyroidism have been described in adult patients with chronic renal failure, but have not been reported in children. Chronic renal failure is one of the predisposing factors of this condition. We report the case of a 13-year-old patient with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis with severe hyperparathyroidism who was found to have intracardiac and rib lesions considered to be br… Show more

“…As in adults, cardiac valve calcification is also described in children on maintenance dialysis. 48 However, in a study of 40 young adults (mean age 23.6 years) who developed ESRD at mean age of 11.5 years, cIMT is similar to healthy controls and only 4 (10%) patients have evidence of coronary calcification. 45 The authors noticed this relatively low rate of cardiac calcification compared with other studies might be explained by a significantly lower amount of prescribed calcium-containing phosphate binders and vitamin D preparations in their patients.…”

“…In children with ESRD, CVD is one of the top two causes of death. CKD is associated with cardiac structural and functional abnormalities [54,55,56]. Autopsy and other studies suggest premature atherosclerosis is associated with CKD in childhood [57].…”
