Mixed Silver/Gold Colloids:  A Study of Their Formation, Morphology, and Surface-Enhanced Raman Activity

Abstract: Ag-coated Au and Au-coated Ag colloidal particles were prepared by deposition of Ag or Au through chemical reduction on Au or Ag colloids, respectively. Different amounts of the depositing metal were employed in order to obtain different compositions of the Au100-xAgx and Ag100-yAuy resulting particles. The obtained colloids were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A different formation mechanism was deduced for the different mixed colloids obtained by this procedure. Mor… Show more

“…It is well known that Au has lower EF values in the visible 37 and many attempts to obtain composite particles by depositing Ag on preformed Au particles have been extensively carried out. 38,39 So we hope our report could have some contributions to the research of the SERS enhancement mechanism on the Au surface.…”

“…Some of the most extensively used SERS substrates are metal colloids because of their simplicity of preparation and strong Raman enhancement. [5,6] However, the use of the colloid solutions for SERS deals with important issues, like stability and reproducibility. [7] Nanostructures can also be fabricated electrochemically and with methods that allow high organization in the structure, like lithography methods and Langmuir-Blodgett technique.…”

“…For example, Freeman et al 20 have studied the SERS properties of Ag-clad Au nanoparticles and proposed that deposition of submonolayers of Ag on preformed colloid Au leads to altered aggregation and SERS enhancement behavior. Rivas et al 21 have studied the SERS activity of mixed silver/gold colloids and investigated the activity of these substrates at different excitation wavelengths. They think that preparation of Ag/ Au mixed colloids allows for the combination of the SERS activities of both metals in a broader interval of the electromagnetic spectrum.…”
