Mobile‐Assisted Language Learning (MALL)

Abstract

Mobile‐assisted language learning (MALL) refers to the use of mobile devices to learn a language in formal or informal situations for learners of all ages. MALL offers language teachers new tools and opportunities to create innovative, engaging learning activities that enhance language acquisition and learner engagement. Language teachers can leverage the benefits of MALL to promote collaborative learning and support a personalized language‐learning experience without the restriction of time and space. Nonetheless, previous research findings indicate that user perception of MALL is mixed, and the effectiveness of MALL remains inconclusive. The literature also suggests that teachers face significant pedagogical challenges when implementing mobile learning, despite the increasing popularity of MALL in both formal and informal learning settings. This entry will discuss these issues and conclude with the future directions of MALL.
