Mobile Relay for LTE: Proof of Concept and Performance Measurements

Abstract: Even with dense base station deployments, public transport users often have a low quality for mobile services. Due to the insulation of the vehicle, passengers experience little to no connectivity on their end devices and low data bit rate. We thus propose a mobile relay architecture based on two imbricated levels of LTE networks and adapted to public transport systems. This architecture is evaluated on an actual LTE test-bed, consisting in standard radio interfaces, off-theshelf terminals and the Amarisoft so… Show more

“…However, the first alternative (called alt1) described in [14] is based on the fact that nodes of the EPC such as Mobile eNB (eNBm), Mobile Management Entity (MME) just need Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity and that IP connectivity can be simply provided by an LTE/EPC network. In [3] we proved this concept with real radio transmissions.…”

“…In [3] we showed with a testbed using real radio transmissions that a mobile relay architecture can be easily implemented with standard Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and with full compatibility with 3GPP recommendations. However, since this solution induces extra overhead and extra latency, the QoS of this solution needs to be evaluated.…”

“…To implement the SAE/LTE network, LTE Amarisoft 100 is used as the EPC in the testbed. Authors in [5] propose a mobile relay architecture for public transport system. They evaluate the architecture with Amarisoft software suite.…”

“…To that purpose, Société du Grand Paris is interested in developing new technologies such as mobile relays. A testbed using real radio transmissions has already proved that a mobile relay architecture can be easily implemented with standard Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and with full-compatibility with 3GPP recommendations [3].…”
