Mobile TV with SVC and hierarchical modulation for DVB-H broadcast services

Abstract: This work shows exemplary applications for combining the hierarchical modulation of DVB-H with the recently approved scalable extension of H.264/AVC (SVC). Although hierarchical modulation is an essential part of the DVB-H standard, it did receive little attention up to now. Compared to a standard modulation scheme, using hierarchical modulation can show a significant gain either in terms of bit-rate or required transmission power. Since with hierarchical modulation the channel capacity is spread over two inde… Show more

“…iii) Modulation and Coding Scheme To reduce error rate and transmission power requirements, hierarchical modulation was proposed in [47]. The performance analysis shows that this scheme increases the number of QVGA services that can be provided on one channel, although the reduction in transmission power was not quantified.…”

“…Several papers on SVC applications have been proposed recently in the literature (Schierl et al, 2006) (Kouadio et al, 2008) (Thang et al, 2008). For example, Hellge et al propose to combine of the spatial and SNR scalability features of SVC with the hierarchical modulation of DVB-H (Hellge et al, 2009). The authors show the benefits of jointly using SVC with hierarchical modulation in terms of error robustness or increased number of services.…”

“…This unequal-error-protection (UEP) capability of HM has drawn substantial research interests [6][7][8][9]. More specifically, the authors of [10][11][12] invoked a HM scheme for providing UEP for image encoding, where the information bits are mapped to specific protection layers according to their error-sensitivity-based priority. Moreover, HM has also been combined with sophisticated channel coding schemes in [11,12] for the sake of protecting the most important information.…”
