Mobility, Aesthetic, Implants, and Satisfaction of the Ocular Prostheses Wearers

Abstract: During the process of facial rehabilitation, the mobility of ocular prostheses must be considered. Whereas some factors depend exclusively on the dentist, such as molding techniques and selection of material for denture construction, regarding ocular rehabilitation, factors, such as type of surgery, whether to adopt implants, and the use of lubricants, deserve special attention owing to their integration and their association with other factors pertaining exclusively to the patient. To establish harmony, and w… Show more

“…Reproducing the patient's expression, character and personality present in the contralateral eye is almost impossible (5) . However, despite these difficulties and the fact that they do not restore vision, ocular prostheses remain a very good choice for the rehabilitation of anophthalmic patients, as they allow patients to recover their aesthetic appearance (7,8) .…”

“…Improve the natural appearance by preserving the anatomical shape of the cavity and its mobility. This last factor is the most important one to conceal the ocular prosthesis, as in conversations with prostheses users, the appliances should not remain static but must have movement, even if it is minimal (6,7,8) .…”

“…2,3 Materials used for ocular rehabilitation demand excellent esthetics, durability, adaptation, and biocompatibility. [4][5][6][7] For these reasons, white and colorless acrylic resins are the materials of choice for these prostheses. [6][7][8][9] One of the main reasons for refabrication of ocular prostheses is color degradation.…”

“…[17][18][19] According to a survey of the literature, NPs that are widely used in industry include zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), and barium sulfate (BaSO 4 ). The addition of TiO 2 20 and ZnO to polymers can improve the mechanical and optical properties of polymers due to the small size, large specific area, and quantum effect of the NPs, as well as the strong interfacial interaction between the organic polymer and inorganic NPs.…”
