Mobility as a Service and Public Transport: A Rapid Literature Review and the Case of Moovit

Abstract: Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is often proposed as a tool for achieving sustainable mobility and, in particular, increasing the share of public transport trips in cities. In this paper we conduct a rapid review of the literature on MaaS and, using Moovit as a case study, we explore the association between the popularity of searches in Google using the term “Moovit” and the share of workers that commute by public transport. “…It should be noted that this new model is not intended to prompt a technological revolution within the transport sector, but a socio-technical transition. MaaS does not bring any technological innovation to the table and, although its name is new, it can be seen as a further step in the quest for integrated mobility [124][125][126]. In summary, the paper aims to emphasise that MaaS must be designed holistically, as each urban dimension affects and is affected by the others.…”

“…Moovit covers all modes of PT, local bicycle services, ride-hailing (Uber / Lyft), scooters, car-sharing, carpooling, etc. The Moovit app combines information from PT operators and authorities with feedback from the user community to offer travellers a real-time picture, including the best route for their journey ( Santos & Nikolaev, 2021 ). Moovit uses both passive crowdsourced data to improve PT route schedule predictions (e.g., collecting information about actual arrival times of PT lines) and user reports, for instance, on incidents, delays, and other type of information ( Heiskala et al, 2016 ).…”
