Intelligent connected devices become a more vital part of our lives. In contrast to prior years, today embedded systems and devices are loosely coupled and cooperate with each other according to changing objectives. Following the service-oriented architectural style, the approach of socalled device-based service systems emerges. The challenge is to build and manage these systems in a reliable, secure, and efficient manner. New and innovative solutions are needed regarding the problems of interoperability, maintainability, as well as automated configuration and management. In our work, these requirements are met by means of policies which are modeled at different levels of abstraction in a design phase and efficiently enforced at runtime by a lightweight management system.
