This study examined whether the orientation of a health appeal differentially influences health beliefs and early-detection practices among young individuals who are potentially at risk. Undergraduates with and without a hypertensive parent were given printed material about hypertension and the importance of early detection framed in either a wellness or illness-threat format. The major dependent measure was attendance at a blood pressure screening during the week following the experimental session. Results showed that parental history (PH) participants were more than twice as likely to attend the screening when given a wellness message in comparison to threat. In the threat condition, PH participants also reported that hypertension was less preventable in comparison to participants without a hypertensive parent. Reported likelihood of developing hypertension was inversely related to subsequent screening attendance among PH participants only. Factors accounting for the efficacy of wellness-oriented appeals among individuals who report a family history are discussed.

Objetivo: Mapear e examinar os programas de promoção da saúde ocupacional implementados com professores de instituições de ensino superior. Método: Revisão de escopo, baseado nos procedimentos recomendados pelo Instituto Joanna Briggs. Na busca foram utilizados os MESH: Faculty, Health promotion, Occupational health e Universities, composta por uma combinação de 15 palavras-chaves nas bases de dados MEDLINE, CINAHL, SCOPUS, PsycINFO e Web of Science. A busca manual foi realizada nas bases RCAAP, Banco de Teses da CAPES e periódicos especializados, sem limite temporal. Resultados: Foram encontrados 2498 estudos, sendo 57 lidos na íntegra e 28 compuseram a seleção final. A maioria dos estudos estabeleceu relações de causalidade entre variáveis. O mapeamento dos dados evidenciou um grande número de estudos voltados para a avaliação da saúde e bem-estar da comunidade acadêmica, com desenvolvimento de habilidades individuais e coletivas. O empowerment e as oportunidades de aprendizagem sobre as questões de saúde foram mencionados nas intervenções que visavam à promoção da saúde física e mental e do bem-estar. Conclusões: Todos os programas assumiram que a promoção da literacia influenciava o bem-estar e a qualidade de vida. Este trabalho possibilita nortear as intervenções em saúde ocupacional para criação de ambientes saudáveis e implementação de políticas públicas saudáveis que apoiam e reorientam as condições favoráveis à saúde dos indivíduos e coletividades, além de proporcionarem a promoção de bem-estar e do estilo de vida saudável nas universidades.

Context Most adults do not achieve adequate physical activity. Despite the potential benefits of worksite health promotion, no previous comprehensive meta-analysis has summarized health and physical activity behavior outcomes from these programs. This comprehensive meta-analysis integrated the extant wide range of worksite physical activity intervention research. Evidence acquisition Extensive searching located published and unpublished intervention studies reported from 1969 through 2007. Results were coded from primary studies. Random-effects meta-analytic procedures, including moderator analyses, were completed in 2008. Evidence synthesis Effects on most variables were substantially heterogeneous because diverse studies were included. Standardized mean difference (d) effect sizes were synthesized across approximately 38,231 subjects. Significantly positive effects were observed for physical activity behavior (0.21), fitness (0.57), lipids (0.13), anthropometric measures (0.08), work attendance (0.19), and job stress (0.33). The significant effect size for diabetes risk (0.98) is more tentative given small sample sizes. Significant heterogeneity documents intervention effects varied across studies. The mean effect size for fitness corresponds to a difference between treatment minus control subjects' means on V02max of 3.5 mL/kg/min; for lipids, −0.2 on total cholesterol:HDL; and for diabetes risk, −12.6 mg/dL on fasting glucose. Conclusions These findings document that some workplace physical activity interventions can improve both health and important worksite outcomes. Effects were variable for most outcomes, reflecting the diversity of primary studies. Future primary research should compare interventions to confirm causal relationships and further explore heterogeneity.
