Model of the Initial Stage of Colloids Retention by a Filter Bed Media Taking Into Account the Phenomenon of Electrostatic Adsorption

Abstract

Given the insufficient study of the initial stage of filtering an aqueous suspension through granular filter media, this research was devoted to a detailed study of the parameters of its physical-mathematical model. According to its kinetic parameters, the initial stage of filtration is significantly different from that of the main stage. This chapter presents the results of the analytical processing of modern physical-mathematical models of colloidal suspension filtration through granular media, which are known from the scientific literature. This analytical treatment was prompted by the need to take into account, established by the results of our experimental and literary studies, the determining influence of the phenomenon of electrostatic adsorption, and the magnitude of the ζ-potential of the components of the studied system “media grain surface – dispersion medium – surface of suspended particles” on the process of filtering a colloidal suspension through polystyrene foam granular media.
