Model predictive control of three-level four-leg flying capacitor converter operating as Shunt Active Power Filter

Abstract: This paper proposes the new implementation of Finite Control States Set Model Predictive Control (FS-MPC) applied to 3-level 4-leg Flying Capacitor Converter (FCC) operating as a Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF). The developed approach is based on three important issues that are described. The first is addressed to the phase to phase model of the 4-wire system to simplify the prediction equations. The second relates to calculation amount reduction gained through applied Flying Capacitors' voltages control and … Show more

“…In recent works, various inner control algorithms are proposed, but many of them are still being developed. However, voltage oriented control and model predictive control are the most promising methods . Voltage oriented control could be realized in both d‐q and α‐β frame, but the simple PI controllers would result in steady‐state error in α‐β frame.…”

“…However, voltage oriented control 37 and model predictive control are the most promising methods. [38][39][40][41][42][43] Voltage oriented control could be realized in both d-q and α-β frame, but the simple PI controllers would result in steady-state error 44 in α-β frame. Model predictive control trusts on the prediction of future values of the state variables.…”

“…Within this trend, structures of utility scale PV inverters are moving toward multilevel topologies, which provide better power quality, lighter passive filtering components, and capability to remove bulky line frequency transformers. A number of papers have recently appeared in the scientific literature dealing with multilevel inverters investigating, among many structures, cascaded H‐bridge inverters, modular multilevel converters, stacked multicell converter, packed U cells inverters, flying capacitors inverters (FCIs),, and quasi‐Z‐source multilevel converters …”

“…Hence, medium/high-voltage SAPF configurations experience their VSC based on a multilevel converter due to its costbenefit in front of a 2L converter [8], [9]. In this way, some multilevel SAPFs applied in 4W systems have been studied and documented in technical literature [8], [10], [11]. However, some of them have drawbacks associated to the high number of dc-link capacitors that leads to an increase in control complexity, imbalance dc-link voltages problems and reduced system reliability.…”
