Model Studies on the Effectiveness of MBBR Reactors for the Restoration of Small Water Reservoirs

Abstract: Abstract. The authors present the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)model with a quasi-continuous flow for small water reservoir restoration, characterized by high concentrations of organic pollutants. To determine the efficiency of wastewater treatment the laboratory analysis of physic-chemical parameters were conducted for the model on a semi-technical scale of 1:3. Wastewater treatment process was carried out in 24 h for 1 m3 for raw sewage. The startup period was 2 weeks for all biofilters (biological beds)… Show more

“…The results of biotechnological tests on a semi-technical scale indicate the possibility of effective elimination of organic pollutants (Fig. 5-7) (Nowak et al, 2018). The data on hydraulic tests, presented in this article, is very important for the configuration of final bioreactors on a technical scale in the conditions of water reservoirs with variable geometrical and qualitative parameters (see: Fig.…”

“…In each case, it is necessary to carefully monitor water quality and perform risk analysis in order to take further actions related to risk management strategy (Hering et al, 2015). The application of MBBR in the treatment of polluted water reservoirs belongs to innovative solutions, which previously had been used only in some aquacultures with a high stocking density (Nowak et al, 2018). There are no literature data reporting on the results of pollution treatment with the application of analogous systems in open water reservoirs.…”

“…The process of revitalization of water reservoirs is one of the most complex activities in the field of environmental engineering. Each action taken should be adapted to the nature of the pollution and the geometric parameters of the reservoir (Chmist and Hämmerling, 2016;Nowak et al, 2018;Mazur, 2019b). If the condition of a reservoir is not critical and it is possible to take non-invasive measures, such methods should be selected (Mazur and Sitarek, 2020).…”

“…Biological beds currently play a key role in wastewater treatment and industrial pollution processes (Juang et al, 2008;Nakamura and Mueller, 2008;Ateia et al, 2015;Ateia et al, 2016;Mazur, 2019A;Mazur, 2019b;Mazur 2020, Nowak et al, 2018Nowak et al, 2019). The scientific literature contains numerous publications on pollution treatment technologies based on various types of biological beds (Andreottola et al, 2000;Ødegaard et al, 2004;Leiknesand and Ødegaard, 2007;McQuarrie and Boltz, 2011;Cao et al, 2012).…”

“…Procedures deciding on the choice of a water revitalization method Surface water pollution continues to be a major problem for drinking water resources in many parts of the world. The forms of pollution can be very diverse and constitute a complicated problem for environ-mental engineers (Dunalska and Wiśniewski, 2016;Mazur et al, 2017;Nowak et al, 2018;Nowak et al, 2019). The scientific and professional literature describes various methods of revitalization and remediation of degraded water reservoirs (Klapper, 2003;Ruan et al, 2006;Dąbrowska, 2008;Faulwetter et al, 2009;Cao, et al, 2012;Dong et al, 2012;Zhao et al, 2012;Gołdyn et al, 2014;Bartoszek & Ko-szelnik, 2015;Łopata et al, 2016;Lake et al, 2017;Sitarek et al, 2017;Hamilton et al, 2019;Mazur, 2019A).…”
