Model tests on piled raft subjected to lateral soil movement

Abstract: Passive loadings due to lateral soil movement induced activities are highly influencing the serviceability and safety of constructions. This research aims to investigate the influence of axial loads, sand density and the depth of moving soil on the lateral behaviour of piled raft under progressively moving sand. In order to achieve this goal taking into account the complex interaction effects of piles, cap and subsoil, a laboratory apparatus and small scale models have been designed and fabricated carefully to… Show more

“…During operation of the building to be restored, reconstructed or repaired, it is possible to change the hydrogeological situation within the core area of the soil bed. For example, extra moistening leads to deterioration of the physical and mechanical properties of soils; the strength of the bed decreases and its deformability increases (Shamsi et al 2019 [10], Lee et al 2018 [11], Ihsan and Toma Sabbagh 2017 [12], Rabiei and Choobbasti 2015 [13], Pronozin et al 2018, 2019 [14,1]).…”

“…The inner faces of the test box were marked at 50 mm intervals to assist accurate formation of sand stacking inside the test box during the tests. The dimensions of the test box have been chosen according to previous researches taking into consideration the boundary conditions influence of the test box (Khari et al, 2013;Al-abboodi and Sabbagh, 2017).…”

“…These studies were conducted to investigate the response of single vertical piles and pile groups under lateral soil movement (e.g. Poulos et al, 1995;Pan et al, 2002;White et al, 2008;Guo and Ghee, 2010;Al-abboodi and Sabbagh, 2017). (Cubrinovski and Ishihara, 2007) Similarly, studies on 'active' batter piles subjected to combined lateral and vertical loads have significantly attracted research efforts for the last four decades (Meyerhof and Ranjan, 1972;Meyerhof and Yalcin, 1993;Zhang et al, 1999;Zhang et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2014;Singh and Arora, 2017).…”

“…In this case, the piles receive the upper load indirectly and mostly considered as stiffeners of the marginal ground or settlement reducers [11]. Many researches are now being done to understand the complex soil-structure interaction (SSI) phenomena in disconnected piled rafts [12] [13] [14] [15].…”
