Modeling and Solution of Joint Storage Space Allocation and Handling Operation for Outbound Containers in Rail-Water Intermodal Container Terminals

Abstract: Storage space allocation and handling operation problems are two main crucial problems in container terminals. Early research efforts, however, are seldom devoted to studying them together. Therefore, this paper considers these two problems simultaneously for outbound containers in rail-water intermodal container terminals (RWICTs), where rail-mounted gantry cranes, inner trucks, and quay cranes are involved. A two-stage problem is proposed: Stage 1 is to determine locations of the containers and reduce the ov… Show more

“…A number of challenges with the AT deployment were pointed out (e.g., introduction of the PTC system in the U.S. for freight railways only; disagreement of railroad unions to adaptation of one-person train crews), which can slow down rail automation if not addressed properly. 4 Bucsky (2018) [33] Study the existing condition of freight traffic and CAV applications in freight transportation.…”

“…Despite the fact that North America is recognized as a global leader in rail freight market, it is anticipated that Asia-Pacific is likely to overtake North America in the following years. Although the growth of containerized cargo has been boosted by the development of intermodal transportation [3][4][5], non-containerized and liquid-bulk freight still governs rail freight transport [1]. Furthermore, the development of various cross-country and intercontinental rail networks, such as Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe international railway, and other initiatives, such as -One Belt One Road‖ by China, is expected not only to provide a projected growth for rail freight and passenger traffic but to open new economic corridors as well.…”

“…As reported in the Alphaliner report for 2021, all of the top 10 container terminals have either operational or under-construction automated container terminals [3]. Using the sea-rail mode can yield cost savings of 10-30% compared to the single sea mode, primarily due to enhanced efficiency and lower transport costs associated with this mode [4]. Several studies, such as [5][6][7][8][9][10], have analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of integrating rail transport with other modes and have highlighted the sea-rail mode as a future development trend that requires urgent attention.…”

“…The dual-GC spans the rail tracks, truck lanes, and storage yard, as shown in Figure 2. Most previous studies regarded GCs as the only handling resources in the main operating area [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. However, GC has some obvious disadvantages of poor maneuverability, slower efficiency, higher energy consumption, and expensive handling costs, and the ITs in RCT have higher flexibility, faster travel speed, lower energy consumption, and lower transportation costs.…”

“…Guo et al [2,3] addressed the GC scheduling of RCT and rail-road container terminal considering crane interference and dwelling position of the train. Chang et al [4,5] developed the coordinated scheduling problem of GCs, ITs, and YCs of RCT under the mixed handling mode. Besides, they further discussed the problem of storage space allocation.…”
